Surge Protection devices

SPD Protection & Types

Surge Protection Devices (SPD's) assist in the protection of valuable electrical and electronic equipment against transient overvoltages originating from lightning and/or switching sources. These transients can cause damage ranging from the premature ageing of equipment to the complete destruction of equipment within the entire electrical installation. Equipment effected can be items such as computers, LED lighting, digital TV's and Electric Vehicles. Protecting such equipment now can help reduce the risk of significant financial cost to replace such items!

TYPES OF SPD's

  • Type 1:  Helps protect the electrical installation from overvoltages caused by direct lighting strikes to the property. They are installed in installations supplied by overhead lines and/or has a metal roof and/or has a Lightning Protection System installed. Installed at the origin of the installation, either within or next to the Consumer Unit / Distribution Board.

  • Type 2:  Helps protect the electrical installation from overvoltages caused by electrical switching events occuring either within or external to the installation.

  • Type 3: Helps protect sensitive electronic equipment installed. Installed at the location of the equipment, that is over 10m from the upstream SPD. Can be installed in, for example, a socket supplying the equipment.

A coordinated system of SPD's is the best approach, meaning that a Type 1 or 2 and 3 will be installed, as required, working together, rather than just having a Type 3 at the equipment.

So contact me today, your local trustworthy electrician in Aberdeen, to have SPD's installed to help protect your electrical installation and equipment.
